The Digital Doc: Exploring Health Tech Innovation

The FTC is considering banning noncompete agreements for physicians. Some see them as necessary for protection, while others argue they suppress wages and hinder mobility. AMA is cautious, while the AHA supports noncompetes for patient care and investment. States already have bans, and the FTC's ruling may arrive next year.

Physicians are up in arms. There is much chatter about how they are being abused through monstrous noncompetes with little benefit. One contract I saw in the past, had a noncompete with the entire world.

Key Concerns as a Physician Working in Telehealth:

  • Limited Mobility: Physicians may have less freedom to change employers, potentially trapping them in unfavorable situations.

  • Entrepreneurial Barriers: Lack of noncompetes could discourage physicians from starting their own practices, stifling innovation and evidence-based care
